The Visionary: Dr. Oscar James Cooper
The portrait honors the life of a leader whose impact spanned over half a century:
Academic Excellence: Dr. Cooper earned his Bachelor of Science in 1913 and his Doctor of Medicine in 1917 from Howard University.
Scientific Roots: During his undergraduate years, he served as a laboratory assistant to the renowned biologist Dr. Ernest Everett Just.
Medical Legacy: He practiced internal medicine in North Philadelphia for over 50 years, operating out of his home and office at 1621 West Jefferson Street, where he was deeply committed to treating underserved populations.
Historic Recognition: His contributions were so significant that in 2020, a block of West Jefferson Street was renamed “Dr. Oscar J. Cooper Way” by the Philadelphia City Council.
Brother Cooper was instrumental in the fraternity's expansion, establishing the second chapter, Beta, at Lincoln University, and becoming the first Basileus of the Mu Chapter in Philadelphia.
A Legacy in Every Stitch
Dr. Cooper was a pillar of his community, a charter member of Philadelphia’s Pyramid Club, and a lifelong supporter of Black charities. Today, his former residence is recognized on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places and marked with a state historical marker.
